'24' Justifications for torture
|
Last year when I visited the Pentagon as Today's Zaman columnists, the Pentagon's support for "24," amongst other things, attracted my attention, It was quite interesting seeing a Pentagon section informing visitors which productions are supported by the US military ,There was no explanation about the nature of this "support " However, I said to myself then these productions supported by the Pentagon must be supporting the Pentagon in return "24" is a very successful television series; there is no doubt about it.

Piracy on high seas
The battle against Somali pirates continues in the Indian Ocean International naval forces, most recently the Danes, score the odd success, but nothing yet has deterred these Somali fishermen from continuing the substantially more lucrative business of seizing cargo ships and ransoming them and their luckless crew for millions of dollars It stands to reason that as more sophisticated technology is deployed, now including pilotless spy planes, the international patrols in this vast area of ocean are going to improve their ability to interdict attacking pirates Equally, as owners sign up to improved convoy systems, vessels moving through the danger area will be harder to seize. In the long-term this may be the answer, leaving the pirates only the slim pickings of vessels that foolishly choose not to cooperate with the international forces sent there to protect them. Also truth be told, though financially strapped governments may be muttering about the cost of the anti-piracy patrols, their naval forces find the experience highly valuable. Not only do they have a real operation on which to work but they are also operating with other navies and learning from each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

The relationship between the governments of Iran and the USA has been tense and nasty since the fall of the Shah, During the long Iran-Iraq War, the USA and her allies even supported the Iraqi regime when it invaded Iran, On July 3, 1988 the US, Navy's guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes shot down Iran Air Flight 655 (IR655) killing all 290 passengers and crew aboard, including 66 children,It was the highest death toll of any aviation incident in the Indian Ocean and the highest death toll of any incident involving an Airbus A300 anywhere in the world, At the time of the attack, Vincennes, fitted with the then-new Aegis combat system, was traversing the Strait of Hormuz inside Iranian territorial waters, and the IR655 was within Iranian airspace, Worse still, after completing their tour, the Vincennes crew was awarded Combat Action Ribbons for having actively participated in ground or surface combat and its captain William C, Rogers III received the Legion of Merit.

Toward a Secure Middle East
|
In my opinion a secure Middle East requires full appreciation of the past, a full understanding of the present and a vision for the future,It is a vision of a Middle East that links up with the world as a stakeholder in the establishment of global peace, security and prosperity - not as a battlefield or a playground in which conflicting international and regional interests confront each other and consequently produce an environment conducive to tension, violence and terrorism, Today there is a trend in the international politics of the Middle East to regard crisis management as a goal in itself rather than a means of making the region a stakeholder.
