Palestine: Revealing a massacre
|
DNA testing has made it possible to trace one’s roots back many generations and there are even free websites that can help users trace their family history based on a few simple clues,Recent findings in my own personal history have been interesting indeed The present task of tracing my family roots was inspired by a book project with Pluto Press, narrating the story of my father, who died recently under tragic circumstances in the same refugee camp to which he was expelled, along with his family 60 years ago, Just weeks into my research, I found myself stumbling into the details of a massacre,And what started as a mere phase of my father’s torn childhood in Palestine has become the core of my book’s narrative

Analysis: Blame the dollar
|
The US economic power horse is running out of ideas and cash as it jostles with a massive national debt, housing and financial crises, rising inflation, and a depreciating currency,This has all contributed to a growing tendency to live off credit amassed through petrodollars and foreign loans, leaving repayment for future generations,Today, in much of America, communities and suburbs are dealing with a drastic increase in foreclosures and short sales,This has not been helped by the fact that gas is selling at over $1 a litre ($4 a gallon),Standard monetary tools such as lowering or increasing interest rates can no longer provide quick fixes to the situation for both economic and political reasons.

It serves no one's purpose
It is impossible to understand what the prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC) of the United Nations imagined would be achieved by indicting Sudanese President Omar Bashir on charges of genocide, As the Arab League’s envoy to Sudan, Salah Halima, pointed out forcefully yesterday, this move will have an entirely negative impact on the already chaotic situation in Darfur,And the ramifications of the ICC’s decision will be more than political, UN peacekeepers are currently struggling alongside African Union troops in the Unamid force to stop Darfur’s murder and bloodshed, For them to have any chance of success, they need the support of the Sudanese armed forces and officials, Yet here is one part of the UN effectively making a decision that ought — on the face of it if the ICC decides to actually issue an arrest warrant for Bashir — to empower UN forces to seize a ruling head of state and take him to The Hague to answer charges against him, in the same way that UN and NATO troops have apprehended those charged with crimes from conflicts in Bosnia and Croatia.

Building bridges between faiths
|
THE interfaith dialogue, which starts tomorrow in Madrid, is of the greatest importance, We say that not because it is very much the idea of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah or because he will address it, The fact is that dialogue between faiths has to occur if the world is to be a safer place, Dialogue is the foundation for respect between peoples,If people do not respect each other, how can they live with each other?,At the very heart of respect for each other has to be respect for each other’s faiths, In the past that mattered less, Cultures and faiths lived side by side, but it was just that — side by side, They were geographically separated; they did not come into daily contact with each other, The segregated world no longer exists,We now live in a global village.

The big miscalculation on Iran
|
According to esteemed American journalist Seymour Hersh, the Bush administration has recently boosted its secret war against Iran, In the latest issue of The New Yorker magazine, Hersh writes that last year Congress approved a presidential request for $400 million to finance covert operations inside Iran aimed at destabilizing the regime and to gather information on its nuclear activities, Hersh adds that cross-border operations against Iran have been going on since last year, but have escalated in a significant way of late giving signals that a pre-emptive strike could be in the works soon,The Hersh article coincides with recent revelations, by US sources, that Israel has conducted a major aerial exercise over the Mediterranean in what is believed to have been a dress rehearsal for a possible military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities, And it was also reported that Adm, Michael Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, visited Israel for the second time in six months last June and met with his Israeli counterpart presumably to discuss a possible attack against what is perceived as a growing Iranian threat.

Big turnaround for US and Iran
|
In two weeks, the period it has been granted, Iran might make known its intentions on its nuclear plans, and hence the future of its tenuous links with the US, The talks in Geneva did not result in Iran’s accepting the so-called “freeze for freeze” deal — a halt in its uranium enrichment in return for no strengthening of UN sanctions, There is no guarantee that at the end of the deadline, Iran will decide, as expressed by the US, between confrontation and cooperation, But after all the threats and counterthreats in recent weeks, the very fact that Iran and the US got together at one table for the first time concerning the nuclear issue represents a huge turnaround for both sides and provides distinct signs that a collision course is being averted.
